Several protesters were arrested in Nairobi’s Central Business District on Thursday as crowds gathered to mark the June 25 anniversary demonstrations that have become a symbol of remembrance, accountability and youth-led civic action in Kenya.
From early morning, roads leading into the city centre experienced disruptions as security officers mounted roadblocks and restricted access to parts of the CBD and areas surrounding Parliament. Businesses remained closed in some sections while groups of demonstrators attempted to enter the city carrying placards, flags and messages honouring those who died during the 2024 protests.
Live footage and eyewitness accounts showed police moving in to disperse sections of the crowd as arrests were made throughout the day.
Reports from local media indicated that several protesters had been arrested in Nairobi CBD by Thursday afternoon. Authorities had not released a consolidated official figure at the time of publication.
A Protest Rooted in Remembrance
This year’s demonstrations were organised as memorial gatherings to honour people who lost their lives during the June 2024 anti-Finance Bill protests.
Participants said the day was intended to remember victims and renew calls for justice rather than celebrate political victories.
“No one deserves to lose their life for expressing themselves.”
That message appeared repeatedly on placards and social media as families, activists and young people reflected on events that changed Kenya’s political landscape.
The original demonstrations in 2024 drew thousands of mostly young Kenyans into the streets in opposition to proposed tax measures. The protests intensified and culminated in dramatic scenes around Parliament before the Finance Bill was later withdrawn.
Heightened Security Across Nairobi
Security remained visibly increased throughout the capital.
Police maintained that citizens have the right to peaceful assembly but warned against violence, destruction of property and disruption of public order.
Roadblocks, security checks and limited movement into key government zones shaped much of the day’s events.
