Nairobi United left-back Geoffrey Onyango who joined from Police FC/HANDOUT Geoffrey “Lefty” Onyango is hoping his experience can help Nairobi United achieve their ambitions after joining the club ahead of the 2026/27 season.
The experienced left-back completed his move on August 1 after leaving Kenya Police, bringing valuable SportPesa Premier League experience and a reputation as an energetic, attack-minded defender.
Onyango, popularly known as “Lefty” because of his strong left foot and preferred position, sees the transfer as an important new chapter in his career.
“I am happy to join Nairobi United and I am ready for this new challenge,” Onyango said.
The 26-year-old made his name at Kariobangi Sharks, where he developed into an influential player and made 106 senior appearances. He scored seven goals and provided 22 assists during his time at the club.
“I learnt a lot at Kariobangi Sharks because that is where I grew as a player and established myself in senior football,” he said.
His performances earned him a move to Kenya Police in 2023, where he continued to compete at the highest level of domestic football and gained experience in continental competition.
Onyango’s versatility has also been an asset. He can operate as a left-back or wing-back and has occasionally played further forward in midfield.
“Nairobi United have a good project and I was convinced this was the right place for me at this stage of my career,” he said.
The defender is expected to provide both experience and an attacking outlet from the left as Nairobi United prepare for the new campaign.
“My game is about working hard, helping the team defensively and also supporting the attack whenever I get the opportunity,” he said.
Onyango has also represented Kenya at Emerging Stars Under-23 level and earned senior recognition with Harambee Stars, including involvement in the COSAFA Cup.
“Playing for the national team is something every player wants, and those experiences have given me confidence and taught me what is required at the highest level,” he said.
He has also been involved in mentoring young footballers at grassroots level, drawing on his own journey through the domestic game.
“I always encourage young players to believe in themselves because I also started from the grassroots,” he said.
As he begins his Nairobi United career, Onyango is determined to use his experience to help the club compete strongly.
“I want to give my best in every match and help Nairobi United achieve the targets we have set,” he said.
