At least 24 people were killed by police officers in May, making it the deadliest month recorded so far this year, according to data compiled by the Missing Voices Coalition (MVC).
The figures show a significant increase in police-related deaths during the month, with nearly half of all fatalities recorded between January and May occurring in May alone.
A total of 49 police-related deaths were documented during the first five months of 2026. Of these, 24 were reported in May, representing almost 49 per cent of the total cases recorded during the period.

Deaths Increased Steadily Before May Surge
The MVC data indicates that police-related deaths remained relatively low during the first four months of the year before rising sharply in May.
Four deaths were reported in January, followed by six in February. March recorded the same number of fatalities, while nine deaths were documented in April.
The figures suggest a steady increase over the months leading up to the sharp spike in May.

The May figure was nearly three times the April figure and six times the January total.

The latest figures are likely to intensify scrutiny of law enforcement agencies and renew calls for accountability in the handling of police operations.
