A family is still struggling.
Albert Ojwang died in June 2025 while in detention in Nairobi, in a case that drew widespread attention and demands for justice.
In the immediate aftermath, Kenyans rallied behind the family, raising funds and offering support. But according to his father, that goodwill did not last.
“They left me and stopped walking with me because I thanked the President,” he said.
Support dwindles over time.
“Right now, even when I travel to Nairobi, I have to look for my own means,” he said.
Public reactions online
His remarks have triggered mixed reactions online, reflecting a divided public mood.
Some commenters criticised his decision to thank the President:
“He exchanged his son’s justice with money… why thank a regime that killed your son,” one user wrote.
Others suggested he should have taken a different approach:
“Ulikuwa unamthank wa nini… ungesema thanks everyone, I still want justice for my kid,” another commented.
A section of users framed it as a cautionary tale:
“Iwe funzo kwako na wengine wenye tabia ya playing both sides,” read one response.
There were also lighter, mocking reactions, with some saying:
“Tulikuwarn 😂😂😂😂” and “Permanent stain mzeee ogopa.”

Controversy over political gratitude
Reports indicated that the President had reached out and donated KSh2 million to support the family during their bereavement.
However, the father believes that acknowledging this gesture may have alienated some Kenyans who were critical of the government at the time.
“When someone offers help when you are grieving, the best thing is to say thank you,” he said.
Living with loss
Despite the public attention the case received, the father says the family’s reality today is far quieter—and harder.
They continue to grieve while navigating financial strain and what he describes as growing isolation.
“The money we received has all been used,” he said.
