Kenya’s mobile phone penetration continued to grow in 2025, reflecting the country’s expanding digital connectivity and increasing reliance on mobile technology.
According to data from the Communications Authority of Kenya, the country recorded a total of 78.3 million mobile phones by December 2025.
Smartphones accounted for the largest share, with 48.7 million devices in use, underlining the growing adoption of internet-enabled technology for communication, business, education, and digital financial services.
Meanwhile, feature phones — commonly known locally as “mulika mwizi” phones — stood at 29.6 million.
Feature phones remain popular among many Kenyans due to their affordability, long battery life, and ease of use, especially in rural areas and among low-income households.
The steady rise in smartphone usage is expected to further drive demand for mobile internet, digital banking, e-commerce, and online services as Kenya continues to position itself as a leading digital economy in Africa.
