The Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) has announced an expansive intake opportunity for recent Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) graduates, unveiling 126 courses across its nationwide campuses. Applications are currently open through the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) portal, with the deadline set for May 6.

In a statement issued on April 30, KMTC Chief Executive Officer Kelly Oluoch said the institution has deliberately broadened its programme offerings to accommodate students with varying KCSE grades, while aligning training with both local and international job market demands.

“We have a range that allows a student with a C- or a C to apply for either a certificate course, a diploma course, a higher diploma course or an upgrading course,” Oluoch stated.

The 126 programmes span a wide spectrum, including short courses, certificates, diplomas, and higher diplomas. These are distributed across several specialised faculties designed to equip students with practical and market-relevant skills.

The Clinical Sciences faculty offers training in areas such as clinical medicine, emergency medical services, and orthopaedic trauma medicine. Meanwhile, the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences provides diploma and higher diploma training in pharmacy.

Other key faculties include Public Health Sciences, which focuses on disease prevention and outbreak response, and the Information Technology and Medical Education faculty, which trains students in medical records and health information management.

The Diagnostic Sciences faculty covers disciplines like medical laboratory sciences, medical imaging, and optometry, while the Nursing Sciences faculty—KMTC’s largest—continues to enrol the highest number of students across certificate, diploma, and higher diploma levels.

Strong Demand for Graduates

According to Oluoch, KMTC graduates remain highly sought after, both within Kenya and internationally. He noted that the institution contributes over 85% of the country’s middle-level healthcare workforce, underlining its critical role in the health sector.

“Demand is not only for the local market but also for the international market,” he said.

The college’s global footprint has also expanded significantly. In the past year alone, KMTC facilitated the placement of 4,084 graduates in overseas markets, including 84 occupational therapy and physiotherapy graduates who secured opportunities in Germany.

Preparing Students for Global Opportunities

To enhance global employability, KMTC has introduced language training in French, German, Arabic, and Amharic, alongside courses in medical entrepreneurship. These additions are aimed at preparing graduates for diverse international work environments.

In a major boost for nursing students eyeing opportunities abroad, KMTC has also secured local access to the NCLEX-RN licensure exam—an essential requirement for practice in countries like the United States and Canada.

“We have negotiated for examinations that allow our students to get into foreign markets like the U.S. and Canada,” Oluoch said, referencing the availability of an NCLEX-RN examination centre in Nairobi.

Faster Training, Direct Job Linkages

KMTC has further streamlined its programmes to ensure students complete their training within shorter timeframes, enabling quicker entry into the workforce. The institution has also partnered with various organisations to create direct pathways from training to employment.

Additionally, the college has worked closely with the Kenya National Qualifications Authority to align its higher diploma qualifications with degree-level standards. This reform is expected to enhance graduate mobility and open up opportunities for further academic progression.

We have worked with the Kenya National Qualifications Authority to equate most of our higher diplomas to most of the degree courses,” Oluoch noted.

Application Details

KMTC is urging interested students to submit their applications through the KUCCPS portal or visit any of its 92 campuses nationwide before the May 6 deadline.

With expanded course offerings, strong industry demand, and increasing global opportunities, the institution is positioning itself as a key gateway for youngKenyans seeking careers in the healthcare sector.
