President William Ruto has promised several infrastructure projects as he offered goodies to residents of Kirinyaga County in a bid to shore up his support in the Mt Kenya region.

Ruto said his administration has invested Sh15 billion to build 4,000 affordable housing units, with the Gichugu and Kirinyaga projects ready for handover.

The President announced a Sh200 million project in the health sector, saying the money will be used to build a new Level 4 hospital in the region.

“I will be coming with the contractor next month when I visit to launch the Level 4 hospital. In Mwea, we will establish a KEMRI research centre, and Sh200 million has been allocated to build a Level 4 hospital in the constituency,” he said at State House, where he had hosted grassroots leaders from Kirinyaga.

In reference to the Sh200 million project, Ruto, who Deputy President Kithure Kindiki accompanied, said he had invested Sh300 million in equipping county facilities with equipment.

The region has also benefited from a Sh1.5 billion kitty to build 12 modern markets, with the President saying three are complete, while hostels to accommodate 4,000 university and college students are under construction.

“We have connected 19,000 households to electricity and will connect another 9,500 in the next financial year. Additionally, we have allocated Sh6 billion to complete roads in the county,” he said.

Speaking during the event, Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru announced that both her county and the wider Mount Kenya region will support President William Ruto in the upcoming 2027 General Election.

She asserted that Ruto continues to enjoy substantial grassroots support, despite growing political competition.

“Wakiona tumenyamaza wasifikirie ni uoga, tulikuwa tunawapa muda tu. Tutashikilia rais William Ruto Mlima Kenya yote, na watashangaa kura ambazo rais atapata 2027,” she said, adding that the region would deliver overwhelming support for the President.

The governor dismissed claims that the opposition could unseat the President, arguing that historical precedent suggests otherwise.

Waiguru referenced previous elections, noting that attempts to remove former presidents Mwai Kibaki and Uhuru Kenyatta from power were unsuccessful.

“Kama Kibaki alikuwa na shida na upinzani haukuweza kumtoa madarakani, na Uhuru pia hawakuweza, sasa mnaona Ruto ndiye watatoa na WANTAM?” she asked.
