Kenya’s electoral body, Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), has issued a final call for eligible citizens to register as voters, with the Enhanced Continuous Voter Registration (ECVR) exercise set to end on Tuesday, 28 April 2026.

The commission says the final day marks a critical moment for those yet to sign up, urging Kenyans to take part in shaping the country’s democratic process.
“If you haven’t registered as a voter yet, this is your moment. Don’t miss the chance to have your voice counted.”

Registration Near You

IEBC has emphasised that citizens do not need to travel to their home counties to register. Using what it calls “open kits”, the commission has enabled registration at any centre across the country, regardless of a voter’s preferred polling station.

This approach is intended to reduce logistical barriers, especially for urban residents, students, and workers living away from their rural homes.
“A citizen can register as a voter for any polling station in Kenya from the registration centre near you,” the commission said.

Areas Excluded from Exercise

However, the exercise has not been uniform nationwide. IEBC confirmed that voter registration is currently suspended in areas with ongoing electoral processes.
These include:
  • Porro Ward
  • Endo Ward
  • Emurua Dikirr Constituency
  • Ol Kalou Constituency
  • Malava Constituency
  • Mbeere North Constituency
The commission says the pause is necessary to maintain the integrity of ongoing by-elections and election petitions.

Beyond the Deadline

While the deadline marks the end of the enhanced mass registration phase, IEBC has clarified that voter registration will not completely stop.
Eligible citizens will still be able to register at IEBC offices across the country after 28 April, though the scale and accessibility may differ from the current nationwide drive.
“Even after the mass registration exercise ends, you can still register as a voter at IEBC offices.”

A Broader Democratic Push

The 2026 exercise has been guided by the theme: “Deepening Democracy in Kenya Through Inclusive Voter Registration.” The commission has framed the campaign as part of a wider effort to expand participation and ensure no eligible voter is left out.
Kenya has, in recent elections, recorded millions of registered voters, with turnout often shaping tightly contested races. Expanding the voter roll remains a key priority ahead of future polls.
