President William Ruto on Friday used his development tour of Taita Taveta to deliver a message to the Opposition, saying it engages in politics of name-calling and lacks an alternative development agenda. He also defended his government’s record on infrastructure and economic transformation.
He said the Opposition had failed to present a credible alternative to the government’s development agenda, and urged critics to focus on constructive proposals rather than personal attacks.
While highlighting ongoing infrastructure projects, including the reconstruction of the Voi–Mwatate–Taveta railway line and other road and market developments, Ruto maintained that his administration would respond to criticism through the delivery of projects rather than rhetoric.
He told Opposition leaders: “William Ruto is not an agenda. It is a person's name,” saying they had reduced national debate into personal attacks instead of policy discussions.
He stated, “They criticise me with words; I will answer them with action,” as he defended the pace of government projects across the country.
He also defended the Broad-Based Government arrangement, saying it was designed to promote national unity and eliminate division, tribalism and discrimination.
The President added that his administration was honouring its manifesto commitments and implementing long-overdue projects aimed at transforming the coastal region and other parts of the country.
He also expressed confidence in his performance, saying: “I want to assure you that I will deliver on the assignment you gave me. When the time comes, you will examine me, and I am confident I will pass with an A+,” he said.
During the tour, he also inspected road works and launched new projects, using the occasion to emphasise that development delivery would continue despite political criticism from opponents.
Taita Taveta Governor Andrew Mwadime called for unity, saying leaders should avoid divisive politics and focus on development, while praising the government’s record of projects in the county, stating, “Taita-Taveta County will be transformed under the leadership of President Ruto,” he said.
Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya said the difference between the President’s leadership and his critics “is like day and night”, adding that the coastal region had benefited from development programmes.
Taita Taveta Women Representative Haika Mzighi said the President had surpassed expectations in delivering on commitments to the county, citing roads, markets, housing and a stadium as key achievements.
Ruto urged supporters to participate in the upcoming United Democratic Alliance grassroots elections scheduled for April 23, 2026, saying the party wanted strong local representation linking citizens to the national government, stating, “We want every village to be linked to the National Government through grassroots leaders because our agenda is bottom up,” he said.
President Ruto maintained that his administration would not be distracted by opposition attacks, insisting that it remained focused on delivering development projects across the country, especially in transport and infrastructure.
Closing the tour, the President reiterated that his focus was on uniting the country and delivering tangible development outcomes, while dismissing opposition politics centred on criticism rather than policy.
He said the government would continue rolling out infrastructure projects, improving trade corridors and supporting economic growth in counties such as Taita Taveta.
He maintained that leadership should be measured by results on the ground rather than political rhetoric.
He urged leaders to work together under the Broad-Based Government to strengthen national cohesion and accelerate development across all regions in the country going forward together.
