Digital strategist and Head of Presidential Special Projects and Creative Economy Dennis Itumbi has given the public a glimpse of the proposed design for the revamped Gikomba Market, sparking discussion among traders and Nairobi residents over the future of one of Kenya’s largest trading hubs.

The design, shared through social media platforms, showcases a modern multi-storey market complex expected to transform the current open-air trading space into a structured and safer commercial centre. The proposed redevelopment aligns with ongoing government plans to modernise markets across Nairobi and improve infrastructure for small-scale traders.

Modern Market Vision

The planned revamp of Gikomba Market is part of a broader government initiative to upgrade trading facilities and enhance safety, organisation, and working conditions.
According to previous government announcements, the modern market is expected to cost billions of shillings and will be developed in collaboration between the national government and Nairobi City County Government.

The project aims to position Gikomba as a modern national trading centre capable of serving traders and customers from across the country. Officials have previously indicated that the new facility will help make Nairobi more orderly, competitive, and globally respected as a commercial capital.

Addressing Long-Standing Challenges

Gikomba Market, located in Nairobi, is widely known as the country’s largest second-hand clothing (mitumba) market and a key source of livelihood for thousands of traders.
Over the years, the market has faced persistent challenges, including frequent fire outbreaks, congestion, and poor infrastructure, which have led to repeated losses for traders.

Part of the Wider Market Modernisation Plan

The Gikomba revamp is also linked to the national government’s commitment to construct modern markets in Nairobi and other parts of the country. Authorities have previously announced plans to build several modern markets to support small-scale traders and strengthen the informal sector.

The release of the proposed design by Itumbi provides the public with an early look at what the future Gikomba Market could look like, as discussions on implementation, funding, and trader relocation continue.
