Kenya's largest telecommunications company, Safaricom, is getting ready to launch a new way to pay for internet. Instead of only offering traditional data bundles, they'll now also have time-based plans.
This means that whether you stream a large video or just check your email, the cost is the same as long as you're connected for the same amount of time.
This new model is expected to be great for people who use a lot of data in a short time, like those who stream movies or download large files. On the other hand, a casual user who only checks WhatsApp occasionally might end up paying the same as a heavy user if they stay connected for the same amount of time.
Why the Change?
Safaricom says the new plans are all about giving customers more choice and flexibility. Since people use the internet differently, this new option lets them pick what works best for them.

The company also hopes it will help manage network congestion by encouraging shorter, more efficient internet sessions.
Here are some of the key benefits of time-based bundles:
Simple billing: It's easier to track than MB/GB usage, especially for those who aren't tech-savvy.
Better value for heavy users: Streamers and downloaders can get more for their money.
Network optimization: It can help reduce strain on the network during busy hours.

Discourages idle connections: It encourages users to disconnect when they aren't actively using data.
Global trend: This model is already used in other markets, like for satellite and niche internet services.
The existing data bundles, including daily, weekly, and monthly options, will remain. By offering both traditional and time-based plans, Safaricom is aiming to stay competitive by giving its customers more control over their spending.
