As public unrest continues to ripple through the streets of Nairobi, a new twist has emerged in the fallout from last Tuesday’s #JusticeForOjwang protests.

Geoffrey Mosiria, the Chief Officer for Environment in Nairobi City County, has come out publicly to accuse Embakasi East MP Babu Owino of orchestrating the infiltration and disruption of the peaceful demonstrations.

In a strongly worded video shared via his X (formerly Twitter) account, Mosiria claimed that Babu Owino was the person responsible for hiring a group of goons who were spotted working alongside police officers, despite being seen earlier inciting unrest.

“I want to tell you this, Babu Owino is not an angel, he’s someone who can do anything, he can play any tricks to win your hearts. You should know the kind of person he is before trusting him,” Mosiria said in part.

The disruption drew widespread condemnation from the public, political figures, and local celebrities who demanded accountability for the events.

Mosiria’s accusations come in the wake of a video apology by Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, who denied allegations that he had anything to do with the hired thugs. However, public scepticism remains high — especially after a viral clip showed the suspected goons outside the governor’s office, boasting that they had successfully “handled” the protesters under his instruction.

In response, Mosiria defended the governor and pointed the finger squarely at Owino. He alleged that the leader of the hired goons, a man identified as “Sonko Swaleh,” is a close associate of the Embakasi MP. According to Mosiria, Swaleh has since fled the county amid the backlash. To support his claims, Mosiria shared what he called “evidence,” including a year-old photo of Swaleh and Owino together and a separate post showing Swaleh wearing a jersey bearing Owino’s name.

As the video gains traction online, debate is raging over who truly gave the order to disrupt the peaceful protests. The truth, it seems, is still unfolding.

Over the past week, Owino has been consistently accusing governor Sakaja of the chaos that were witnessed last Tuesday in Nairobi CBD during the peaceful protests demanding justice for teacher-cum blogger Albert Ojwang who allegedly died in police custody.

"Governor Sakaja, Nairobi did not elect you to unleash goons on its people. You promised leadership. You spoke of change. But what we’re seeing is betrayal," reads part of Owino's post accusing the governor.
