Nearly 24 million infants missed their first routine measles vaccine dose worldwide in 2023, raising concerns about protection against a highly contagious but preventable disease. According to new Global Burden of Disease estimates, approximately 23.7 million infants missed the dose, 1.7 million more than in 2019. Sub-Saharan Africa accounted for about half of those missed vaccinations, while South Asia represented roughly one-fifth, underscoring persistent immunisation gaps.
