Mazingira Day is celebrated annually on October 10 to promote environmental conservation and tree growing.
The holiday was formerly known as Moi Day in honour of former President Daniel arap Moi. Following the promulgation of the Constitution in August 2010, it was removed from the list of national public holidays.
On November 8, 2017, the High Court restored the holiday as a public holiday on October 10.
On December 19, 2019, the Cabinet approved the renaming of Moi Day to Huduma Day. In 2020, then Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i gazetted it as Utamaduni Day.
President William Ruto renamed the holiday Mazingira Day on April 24, 2024.
This year, Trans Nzoia County will host the national celebrations.
The national theme is “Our Environment, Our Responsibility: Collective Action for Tree Growing and Environmental Stewardship,” highlighting the importance of collective efforts to protect the environment.
