Western Europe has the highest share of people who believe the world has worsened over the past year, at 81 per cent, followed by Northern Europe at 80 per cent, according to a September 2026 report by the Rockefeller Foundation.

Oceania ranked third at 78 per cent, while the United States and Canada recorded 72 per cent.

Eastern and Central Europe also stood at 72 per cent, followed by Latin America at 66 per cent and Southeast Asia at 63 per cent.

Sub-Saharan Africa recorded 50 per cent, compared with 48 per cent in the Middle East and North Africa. The report links worsening perceptions to security threats and declining long-term economic optimism.
