Mashujaa Day, also known as Heroes' Day—where "mashujaa" is Swahili for "heroes"—is a national celebration observed annually on October 20.

Initially known as Kenyatta Day, the holiday was established to commemorate the detention of key leaders in the fight for independence in 1952.

It was later renamed Mashujaa Day following the promulgation of the 2010 Constitution of Kenya.

The day was enacted to honour all national heroes, expanding its focus beyond just those who fought for independence to recognise all individuals who have made notable contributions.

The theme for 2026 is “Security, Sports and the Finance Sector (The Economy)”.

The 2026 celebrations are co-hosted by Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, and Nandi. Overall, it remains a significant day for Kenyans to honour the heroes who have shaped the nation's past and present.
