Ebola: Kenya's response by the numbers/Sydney Nyachiro

Kenya confirmed its first Ebola case on October 6, 2026, after a person who arrived from the Democratic Republic of Congo on October 3 was hospitalised and died two days later.

Of 267 samples tested across five laboratories, only the deceased patient tested positive, with no additional cases detected in the country.

Kenya’s public health response has included screening 652,584 travellers since May 2026, while 4,971 health workers have received specialised training in Ebola prevention and case management.

The Ministry of Health has urged the public to remain calm, maintain strict hand hygiene and avoid contact with people showing symptoms of viral illness.

The measures, which combine enhanced surveillance, health-worker preparedness and public awareness, are aimed at detecting potential cases early, limiting transmission and preventing the outbreak from spreading further.
