Kenya is expanding efforts to tackle sickle cell disease (SCD) through early screening, community awareness and specialised care.

The Ministry of Health and World Health Organisation estimate that about 14,000 children are born with SCD in Kenya every year, with Western, Nyanza and Coastal regions recording a high disease burden.

Infant screening targets babies at six weeks, with those aged up to one year eligible under the programme. More than 107,000 Community Health Promoters have been trained on SCD, alongside over 800 healthcare workers.

A national registry is also being established to track patients and support their care.
