What to know about International Day of Democracy/ROSA MUMANYI

Observed annually on September 15, the International Day of Democracy was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2007 to promote and uphold democratic principles around the world.

The day highlights the importance of civic engagement and active citizen participation, with freedom of expression recognised as a fundamental pillar of democracy.

The 2026 theme, “Raising Hands and Voices – Fostering Agency and Ownership through Deliberative Democracy,” underscores the importance of inclusive dialogue and meaningful public participation in governance.

It also highlights the role of young people in shaping and sustaining democratic societies.

The observance provides an opportunity for governments, civil society organisations and media to promote democratic values and encourage greater public involvement in decision-making.

It also serves as a global reminder of the need to protect human rights, strengthen transparent institutions and uphold democratic processes for current and future generations.
