Kenya has registered significant progress in expanding support for Persons Living with Disabilities (PWDs) over the last four years, driven by increased funding and scaled-up social protection programs.
National Council for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) data reveals that annual budget allocations to the agency rose from Sh1.9 billion to Sh2.1 billion. This increase in funding has enabled a wider reach across direct financial assistance, educational support, and institutional capacity building.
Direct support for individuals expanded substantially during this period. A total of 330,970 PWDs were newly registered, while 17,777 individuals received assistive devices. Additionally, cash transfer beneficiaries grew from 38,118 to 63,960, widening the safety net for vulnerable households.
Education and community empowerment initiatives also recorded targeted backing. Financial aid reached 12,105 learners who were awarded bursaries, alongside grants extended to 365 PWD groups. To enhance service delivery and physical accessibility, 99 institutions received infrastructure support.
These interventions mark a broader drive by the National Council for Persons with Disabilities to scale social inclusion, strengthen institutional resources, and boost financial assistance for disabled persons across the country.
