African countries are producing more tobacco while spending increasingly more on imported cigarettes. According to the WHO, Africa’s cigarette import bill more than doubled between 2012 and 2024, rising from 833 million US dollars to 1.77 billion dollars. WHO says the trend highlights a worrying pattern, with countries exporting raw tobacco leaf while importing manufactured cigarettes that contribute to addiction, disease and premature deaths.
