The European Commission has designated ChatGPT as a “very large online search engine” after its monthly users surpassed 45 million, triggering stricter regulatory oversight. Reddit and gaming platform Roblox were also designated “very large online platforms” after meeting the required threshold. The three businesses have until the end of 2026 to comply with the EU’s Digital Services Act, which requires major platforms to assess and mitigate risks linked to algorithms, illegal content and potential harm to minors.
