The world’s largest megacities continue to grow as rapid urbanisation drives millions of people into major metropolitan centres.
According to data from Statista, Jakarta ranks as the world’s most populous city, with an estimated 41.9 million inhabitants.
Dhaka follows with 36.6 million people, while Tokyo ranks third with 33.4 million.
New Delhi has a population of 30.2 million, followed by Shanghai at 29.6 million and Guangzhou at 27.6 million.
Cairo is Africa’s most populous city on the list, with an estimated 25.6 million inhabitants, placing it seventh globally.
In comparison, New York City has 13.9 million residents, while London has 10.4 million.
The figures highlight the scale of population growth in major urban centres, particularly in Asia, where seven of the nine cities featured are located.
The rapid expansion of megacities is increasing demand for housing, transport, healthcare, water, sanitation and other essential services.
