Television viewership across Kenya continues to be overwhelmingly driven by current affairs, with news content commanding nearly half of total broadcast preferences.

Latest official sector statistics from the Communications Authority of Kenya’s Audience Measurements and Industry Trends Report for the fourth quarter of 2025/26 (covering April to June 2026) show that news accounts for 49.1% of TV genre preferences nationwide.

Entertainment and drama hold the second position, drawing 19.4% of viewing interest, followed closely by sports broadcasting at 16.1%.

Feature films and movies account for 12.4%, while music programming secures a 10.1% share of the audience.

Specialized and niche content categories capture smaller segments of total screen time. Soap operas register a preference rate of 5.7%, whereas political broadcasts sit at 2.5%.

Light entertainment and comedy programming stand at 1.9%, barely edging out talk shows, which capture 1.6%.

At the lower end of viewership preferences, religious and inspirational broadcasts capture 1.2% of viewers, followed by educational and informative content at 1.1%.

Documentaries, along with a combined segment for morning shows and other miscellaneous broadcasts, tied at the bottom with 0.4% each.

The industry trends report highlights a stark contrast in media consumption habits, showing that while entertainment and lifestyle offerings capture steady engagement, informative news coverage remains the undisputed primary driver for television audiences nationwide.
