Kenyans overwhelmingly prefer news and current affairs over any other form of broadcast programming, making up nearly half of all radio consumption in the country.

The Audience Measurements and Industry Trends Report for the fourth quarter of the 2025/26 financial year (April to June 2026), released by the Communications Authority of Kenya, reveals that 49.12 per cent of listeners tune in primarily for news updates and current events. This commanding share places informative broadcasting far ahead of competing formats on the airwaves.

Entertainment and talk shows represent the second most popular category, capturing 20.61 per cent of total radio listenership. Sports content follows as the third choice, accounting for 15.22 per cent, while dedicated music programming attracts 14.21 per cent of the audience.

Specialised genres record significantly smaller shares of national listenership. Religious and inspirational broadcasts command 4.29 per cent.

Meanwhile, educational and informative shows register at 1.03 per cent, closely mirrored by lifestyle and culture programming, which trails at 1.02 per cent.

The findings highlight a distinct public demand for real-time information, positioning news and discussion segments as the primary drivers of broadcast engagement across Kenyan households.
