Kenya’s illicit alcohol market is estimated to be worth Sh203 billion, highlighting the scale of the illegal trade and its economic and social impact.

According to the Economic International Study (2025) by the Alcoholic Beverages Association of Kenya, illicit alcohol accounts for about 60 per cent of total alcohol consumption in the country.

The illegal trade is estimated to cost the government Sh120 billion in annual revenue losses.

More than 14,000 alcohol-related deaths are recorded annually, while 74 per cent of consumers cite affordability as a key factor.

Illicit spirits can be up to 80 per cent cheaper than legally produced alternatives.
