Global internet users aged 16 and older overwhelmingly prioritise communication and social connection above all other digital activities, according to the Digital 2026 Mid-Year Global Update Report covering April 2026.

Social networks claim the top spot globally, with 93.8 per cent of users visiting or using these platforms.

Closely following are chat and messaging services at 93.6 per cent, highlighting a massive global preference for real-time interaction.

Search engines or web portals retain a firm hold on information discovery, attracting 79.3 per cent of connected adults.

Essential tools for everyday utility and commerce also maintain strong adoption rates. Email services reach 74.4 per cent of users, closely matched by e-commerce platforms—including shopping, auctions, or classifieds—at 74.2 per cent.

Meanwhile, navigation and location-based platforms, such as maps and parking services, are utilised by 53.4 per cent of the online demographic.

Entertainment and information categories display steady engagement. Music platforms draw 46.6 per cent of users, followed by weather checking at 42.9 per cent and news platforms at 40.0 per cent.

Personal finance and delivery services follow closely, with banking, investing, or insurance capturing 38.7 per cent, food takeaway and delivery at 38.4 per cent, and travel services at 36.8 per cent.

Rounding out global online habits, gaming platforms attract 32.1 per cent of users, while business, work, and collaborative working tools engage 31.2 per cent.

Sports platforms record the lowest reach among the measured categories at 26.3 per cent, underscoring how communication and utility dominate daily digital activity.
