Information retrieval and personal connection remain the dominant drivers of global internet usage among adults, according to findings from the Digital 2026 Mid-Year Global Update Report covering global data for April 2026.

The survey of primary online motivations for internet users aged 16 and older worldwide highlights a diverse array of daily online activities, led overwhelmingly by the search for knowledge.

Finding information stands out as the primary reason for going online, cited by 60.1 per cent of users globally.

Close behind, 57.7 per cent of respondents use the internet to stay in touch with friends and family, while 53.4 per cent log on to watch videos, TV shows, or movies. Remaining informed is also a top priority, with 51.4 per cent seeking to keep up to date with news and events.

Beyond staying connected and entertained, practical problem-solving forms a significant part of the online experience.

Nearly half of users, at 48.5 per cent, research how to do things, while 45.4 per cent go online to access and listen to music.

Furthermore, 44.7 per cent search for new ideas or inspiration, 44.1 percent utilize the web to fill spare time and do general browsing, and 43.2 per cent research products and brands.

Lifestyle and functional activities round out user priorities across the globe. Researching places, vacations, and travel draws 36.9 per cent of users, closely followed by education and study-related purposes at 35.8 per cent.

Managing finances and savings engages 34.5 per cent, while 34.2 per cent research health issues and healthcare products.

Gaming attracts 29.7 per cent of users, and 28.9 per cent rely on digital tools to organise their day-to-day lives.
