Ten major earthquakes of magnitude 7.0 or higher have been recorded globally so far in 2026, highlighting continued seismic activity across several regions.
According to data from AccuWeather, the strongest event was a magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck the Philippines on June 7.
Other powerful earthquakes were recorded in Tonga, Vanuatu, Indonesia, Japan, Venezuela, Mexico and Malaysia.
Colombia recorded the latest major earthquake on August 10, with a magnitude of 7.4, making it the 10th earthquake worldwide this year to reach at least magnitude 7.0.
The quake was also the strongest to hit Colombia since a magnitude 8.0 earthquake was recorded on July 31, 1970.
The data shows that major seismic events have been spread across different parts of the world, with several countries experiencing more than one powerful earthquake.
Earthquakes of this magnitude can cause significant damage, trigger landslides and, in coastal areas, pose tsunami risks.
