The number of active taxpayers in Kenya has nearly doubled over the past seven years, according to data from the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA).

The taxpayer base increased from 5.1 million in 2018/19 to 5.77 million in 2019/20 and 6.547 million in 2020/21.

It rose further to 7.225 million in 2021/22 before reaching 8.153 million in 2022/23. In 2023/24, the number increased to 9.669 million.

The latest figures show that Kenya had 9.87 million active taxpayers in 2024/25.

The data reflects a continued expansion of the country’s active taxpayer base, with the number increasing by about 4.2 million between 2018/19 and 2024/25.
