Frequent yawning is often linked to tiredness, drowsiness or fatigue, but it can also have other causes.

Sleep deprivation caused by insomnia, stress or shift work may trigger excessive yawning.

Sleep disorders, including sleep apnoea and narcolepsy, can also contribute. Some people may yawn frequently because of side effects from medications used to treat depression or anxiety.

Depression itself may also be associated with excessive yawning. In rare cases, frequent yawning can signal an underlying medical condition, including a brain tumour.

Persistent or unusual yawning should therefore not be ignored, especially when accompanied by other concerning symptoms.
