Former Radio Africa Journalist Rose Mbugua Dies in Tragic Nairobi Highway Accident

Former Radio Africa journalist Rose Mbugua has died following a road accident involving a motorcycle and a concrete mixer along Uhuru Highway in Nairobi as reported by several media outlets.

Details of the Accident

According to police, the accident occurred at about 5.30 p.m. on Friday near the University Way roundabout. Preliminary investigations indicate that both the motorcycle and a Foton concrete mixer were travelling from the Westlands direction towards the Nairobi Central Business District when the motorcycle rider reportedly hit the pavement, lost control and crashed into the left side of the truck.

The impact threw Mbugua, who was travelling as a pillion passenger, off the motorcycle. She sustained severe head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. Officers later documented the scene before moving her body to Nairobi City Mortuary, where a post-mortem examination is expected to be conducted. Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash are ongoing.

Tributes to the Young Journalist

Mbugua, who was 24, previously worked at Radio Africa Group. Following news of her death, colleagues and members of the media fraternity paid tribute to her, remembering her as a hardworking and humble journalist. Messages of condolence also circulated on social media as many expressed shock over the loss of the young media professional.

Rising Concerns Over Motorcycle Safety

The fatal crash came during a period in which authorities have continued to raise concern over the number of road accidents involving motorcycles. Police reported that 13 people lost their lives in separate road accidents on Friday night alone. The fatalities included five motorcycle riders, five passengers, two pedestrians and one pillion passenger, while more than 20 other people sustained serious injuries in the various incidents.
