President William Ruto has announced a major boost for Kenya’s creative industry. Every winner at the 2026 Kalasha International Film and TV Awards will now receive Sh500,000.
The Head of State made the announcement while attending the awards ceremony at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) in Nairobi.
He revealed a Sh300,000 top-up to the initial Sh200,000 prize per winner.
The increase aims to strengthen support for Kenya’s creative industry while rewarding excellence in film and television.
Speaking at the event, President Ruto praised the hard work of Kenyan creatives.
“Choreographers, dancers, designers, writers, filmmakers, musicians, digital artists, and storytellers who bring our streets and stages to life, I see you. I recognise your craft, honour your hustle, and remain deeply inspired by your work,” he said.
The Kalasha Awards celebrate outstanding achievements in film, television, and related creative fields. The prestigious event has grown into a major platform that highlights Kenya’s vibrant entertainment sector.
By raising the prize money, the government hopes to motivate more artists and elevate the quality of local productions.
President Ruto also shared plans for the future of the awards. He said the State House will bid to host the 2027 Kalasha Awards. This move forms part of efforts to decentralise the event and encourage counties to compete in hosting national creative industry ceremonies.
The announcement comes as Kenya continues to position its creative economy as a key driver of growth and employment.
The higher cash awards are expected to attract greater participation and investment in Kenyan film and television projects.
President Ruto’s remarks underscored the government’s commitment to recognising talent that shapes Kenya’s cultural identity both locally and internationally. With the new prize structure, winners at the 2026 edition will take home significantly more support for their work.
The decision reflects growing official appreciation for the role creatives play in telling Kenyan stories and building a dynamic entertainment sector.
As preparations for the 2027 edition begin, counties are now encouraged to step forward and showcase their capacity to host such landmark events.
