Landslide on Iten–Kabarnet Road/KeNHA

  • Motorists have been urged to exercise caution after a landslide blocked a section of the Iten–Kabarnet Road following heavy rainfall being experienced across the country.

In a traffic advisory issued on April 29, the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) said the incident occurred near Kolol, cutting off access along the affected stretch.

“Due to ongoing heavy rainfall across the country, a landslide has occurred along the Iten–Kabarnet Road near Kolol, blocking the affected section,” the authority said.

The authority added that it is closely monitoring the situation and will issue updates as necessary, while appreciating public cooperation “as it works to ensure the safety of all road users.”

The incident comes amid a period of sustained rainfall that has been pounding many parts of the country, often falling during the night and early morning hours.

Last week, the Kenya Meteorological Department warned of intensified rains and strong winds expected between April 24 and May 1, 2026. In the advisory, acting director Edward Muriuki said rainfall exceeding 20mm within 24 hours was likely across large sections of the country.

The forecast highlighted several high-risk regions, including the Highlands both east and west of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, and parts of Northwestern, Northeastern, and Southeastern Kenya.

Counties such as Baringo, where the affected road is located, were listed among areas expected to receive significant rainfall.

The ongoing downpours have raised concerns over potential disruptions, including flooding, poor visibility, and damage to infrastructure.

Authorities continue to monitor weather patterns and road conditions as the rainy season persists.
