Kenyan registered Cargo plane that crashed in Mogadishu killing all five on board in March last year/file 

Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir has appointed an 8-member Taskforce team to probe several air accidents involving Kenyan-registered planes in neighbouring Somalia and South Sudan.  

In the appointment contained in the Kenya Gazette of Friday, April 24, Chirchir said the probe team will review reports of all the accidents reported in the last five years.

The term of office for the team shall be a period of two months, with effect from Friday and will be required to prepare a comprehensive report of its findings and make any recommendations to address any safety issues that may be identified out of the findings for action by the aviation industry in Kenya.

Former Kenya Airways pilot Captain Peter Maranga will chair the team alongside Director Air Accidents Investigations Unit in the ministry, Fredrick Kabunge. Fredrick Aggrey Opot will serve as vice chairperson.

The members of the panel are Capt Nduati Herman Njama, Rtd Lt Col Mike Mulwa (formerly of the Kenya Air Force and now Everett Aviation), Ephantus Kamau, Capt. Valentine Wendoh and James Mwangi.

“The Aircraft Accident Investigation Team is mandated to review all the preliminary accident reports for accidents involving Kenyan registered or operated aircraft presented by the Republic of South Sudan and the Federal Republic of Somalia, for the last five years,” the notice reads.

Brenda Mwango, Mathias Ombasa, and Albert Mwangeka will serve as joint secretaries to the team, which will, among others, investigate any other matter relating to or consequential to the accidents and make appropriate recommendations for the prevention of recurrence of such accidents.

They will also examine, evaluate, analyse or test any information, data, material or substance to validate any conclusions or assumptions made in the submitted reports; conduct interviews and engagements with relevant industry players to establish facts and information in furtherance of the mandate of the Team.

On March 23, 2025, a Kenyan-registered cargo plane crashed 24 kilometres southwest of Mogadishu, killing five on board, while a Kenyan-registered aircraft registration number 5YJXN operated by Jubba Airways crashed at the beginning of runway 05 of Aden Adde International Airport (AAIA), Mogadishu, at 11:28 on July 18, 2022.
