A statement by Karen Nyamu has sparked renewed public discussion about government spending after she questioned comparisons between past and current State House budgets.

This defense follows public debate triggered by her earlier comments, which compared budget allocations from different administrations.

“Kama Uhuru Kenyatta hakujenga State House mpya, mbona mnacompare budget ya watu wawili wenye hawakufanya kazi same?”

Additionally, her statements come amid heightened scrutiny of projects linked to William Ruto's administration, particularly developments within State House, Nairobi.

Kenya’s current administration is operating under one of the country’s highest national budgets in recent years. Treasury reports have shown increased allocations across sectors, even as citizens continue to raise concerns about the cost of living and funding gaps in essential services such as healthcare.

Some critics argue that large-scale projects at the State House risk sending the wrong signal at a time when public hospitals face shortages of medicine and staffing challenges.

Old Promise, New Debate

The discussion has been amplified by the re-emergence of a 17 July 2022 video showing Ruto, then Deputy President, pledging to build a religious structure at State House.

Speaking at a church service in Juja, Kiambu County, he said he would construct:

“a big church, a great altar”

In July 2025, Mumias East MP Peter Salasya sparked national debate after publishing a strongly worded open letter criticising plans to construct a KSh 1.2 billion church within State House Nairobi, directly addressing President William Ruto and raising concerns about public spending, constitutional duty and religious inclusivity during a period of rising living costs, stating,

“You’re not just the leader of Christians but also Muslims, Hindus, traditionalists, and atheists—every Kenyan,”

While linking the project to broader economic strain and arguing that resources should prioritise essential services such as healthcare and food security, as Kenya operates under one of its largest national budgets in recent years.
