The world’s governing soccer body, the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA), has formally launched investigations into leadership wrangles at the country’s football federation.
FIFA is now demanding to be furnished with information on the circumstances under which Federation of Kenya Football (FKF) President Hussein Mohammed was suspended over a Sh46 million insurance saga.
In a letter addressed to FKF on Sunday, April 26, FIFA said it is working jointly with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to assess the situation and establish whether due process was followed in the decisions taken by the FKF National Executive Committee (NEC).
“We wish to inform you that FIFA, in coordination with the Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF), is currently assessing this matter with a view to gaining a clear and accurate understanding of the circumstances surrounding the adoption of the Resolution, as well as its compliance with the FKF Statutes,” the letter sent by email to FKF states.
FIFA has directed FKF to submit to it documents to support its review, including records of how the emergency NEC meeting was convened, proof of quorum, voting details, and evidence that the affected officials were given a fair opportunity to respond before any action was taken as outlined in articles 38, 40 and 41 of the FKF constitution.
“Further, we kindly request that you provide a detailed written justification underlying the adoption of the Resolution, together with copies of all documents, records, correspondences or other material that were relied upon by the NEC in reaching its decision,” Elkhan Mammadov, Chief Member Association Officer, states in the letter copied to CAF.
On Friday, FKF held an emergency NEC meeting and suspended Hussein, alongside Acting CEO Dennis Gicheru and NEC member Abdullahi Yusuf, over a dispute of Sh42 million insurance cover for last year’s CHAN tournament.
On Saturday, Hussein rejected the decision to force him to step aside, terming the move unjustified while maintaining that no funds were lost during the 2025 CHAN.
“The procurement of the insurance for CHAN 2025 was conducted within the framework of the CAF host agreement. We state categorically that the required insurance cover was procured by CAF, not myself, and was duly secured and maintained throughout the tournament, contrary to the malicious reports,” Hussein insisted.
He added, “FKF did not transfer or pay money to any insurance company for the CHAN competition, and I can challenge anyone to provide evidence that FKF paid the money. There was no loss of money in relation to the insurance cover.”
The FKF President further claimed the NEC members led by his deputy, MacDonald Mariga, had violated the organisation’s rules and procedures when they met to remove him.
“The purported meeting held on the 24th of April was not confirmed as having happened, because I have not received any formal communication about the same. In accordance with the FKF constitution 2017, the meeting was irregular, unlawful, and unconstitutional.”
“Consequently, the so-called decision to suspend or remove any FKF member arising from that sitting is automatically null and void. Article 38 Clause 2 of the FKF Constitution provides as follows: The President shall convene meetings of the national Executive Committee where 50 per cent of Executive Committee members request a meeting, the President shall convene it within 21 days, failing which the members may convene the meeting themselves. I did not convene any NEC meeting yesterday,” he noted.
