Kenya’s national women's football team, the Harambee Starlets, face their biggest test today. They take on Australia in the final of the 2026 FIFA Women's Series.

The match kicks off at 5:30 pm at the Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi.

The atmosphere in the capital is building. Fans are expectant after the team's strong performance earlier in the week. The Starlets secured their spot in the final by defeating India 2-0 on April 11.

Goals from Martha Amunyolete and Tereza Engesha gave the hosts a chance at the trophy.

President William Ruto has joined the wave of national support. He released a video message on social media that has since gone viral. In the clip, the President discarded formal protocol to speak directly to the players using local slang.

He told the team that the entire nation is standing with them as they prepare for the showdown.

“Harambee Starlets, we are behind you, as you take on Australia today. Chezeni kama nyinyi and know that the entire nation is banking on your win. Wakenya Stars wamejaa ngori. Wacha kieleweke,” he said in the viral reel.

Bridging the Gap

On paper, the Harambee Starlets enter the final as significant underdogs. Australia is currently ranked 15th in the world. In contrast, Kenya sits at 134th. This gap of over 100 places highlights the scale of the challenge facing Beldine Odemba’s side.

However, the Starlets have shown they can compete. Their victory over 67th-ranked India proved they are capable of upsetting higher-ranked opponents. The team has been training hard to close the tactical gap against the "Matildas."

Preparation for Morocco

This inaugural FIFA Series is about more than just one trophy. It is a strategic tournament designed to give teams international exposure against different styles of play.

For Kenya, this is vital preparation. The team is looking ahead to the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco. Coach Beldine Odemba is using these matches to test her squad’s depth and resilience.

The nation now waits to see if the Starlets can turn the President's words into a historic victory on home soil.

The President’s Love for Sports

President William Ruto has strategically positioned himself as a leading supporter of Kenyan football, notably through high-profile personal engagements and unprecedented financial incentives for the national team.

During the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN) hosted in Kenya, he famously visited the Harambee Stars’ dressing room and training camps, pledging millions in bonuses for victories.

He promised each player KSh 2.5 million for key wins and even offering two-bedroom affordable housing units if the team reached the semi-finals.

Beyond individual rewards, the President has anchored his sports legacy on the ambitious "Pamoja Bid," which successfully secured hosting rights for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) alongside Uganda and Tanzania.

He has spearheaded a massive infrastructure overhaul under the Sports and Arts Infrastructure Masterplan, which includes the construction of the 60,000-seat Talanta Stadium.
