Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi has given a detailed account of how he was attacked in Kisumu, describing a sudden and violent incident that left him unconscious before he was rescued and taken to the hospital.
Speaking after his recovery in a press conference on Saturday, April 11, the senator narrated that he had travelled to Kisumu for routine engagements.
He said he had gone for a shave before planning to meet a colleague to discuss upcoming football activities in Vihiga.
“I had gone to Kisumu for a shave,” he said, explaining that the meeting had been scheduled ahead of a planned session with football officials. The discussions were to focus on preparations for his sponsorship of a local league.
According to the senator, the meeting took place at a public establishment where he and his colleague were seated at a table. He noted that the location is generally considered secure due to surrounding businesses and the presence of an international hotel.
While there, he said a journalist briefly approached, greeted him, and left. Shortly after, he asked his security officer to step out briefly to withdraw money from a nearby mobile money outlet.
“So I needed some money. So I asked my security to go and withdraw some money for me,” he said, noting that the outlet was about 50 metres away.
It was during this period that a group of young people entered the premises. The senator estimated they were between 15 and 20 in number. At first, he said, there was no immediate cause for alarm.
“They didn’t look hostile,” he said. “They were shouting, Senator.”
He explained that such encounters are not unusual, and he initially assumed the group was approaching in a friendly manner. Two of them greeted him as he remained on a phone call.
However, he said the situation quickly changed.
“I didn’t see any danger until they started hitting me and saying, ‘Why are you supporting one term?’” he said.
The senator said the assault escalated rapidly, leaving him unable to defend himself.
“Before long, I was unconscious because they really hit me so hard,” he said. “I tried to run away. I fell down, and they continued to hit me.”
He added that his security officer returned after noticing the commotion. At that point, he said, the situation became more tense.
“One of the guys… was actually trying to remove a gun to shoot me,” he said. “But when my security removed his, they all panicked, and they ran away.”
Following the intervention, the senator said he managed to escape through the back of the premises.
“I ran to the kitchen. Behind the kitchen there, there is a door… and my guys had organised my car to go on the other side. That’s how I was saved,” he said.
He was later taken to Aga Khan Hospital for treatment.
Addressing claims circulating online about the nature of the incident, the senator dismissed suggestions that the attack was linked to a personal relationship.
“It was not a love triangle; I have a beautiful wife. Even if I wanted to do love, I cannot do it in the open,” he said.
He described the claims as misleading and expressed concern about how quickly alternative narratives had spread.
“It is unfortunate that when a leader in Kenya is attacked, the narrative quickly shifts to personal matters instead of focusing on the truth,” he said.
The senator also questioned the speed at which information about the incident appeared online.
“Within 10 minutes of the attack, bloggers were already out giving their version of events. They seemed to know what had happened even before my own media team,” he said.
He maintained that the account he provided reflects the sequence of events as he experienced them on the day of the attack, urging for investigations to be conducted.
