The quiet of Makaburini Cemetery in Kericho County was broken this past Sunday. Residents and human rights activists gathered to demand answers about a secret mass burial. Reports suggest that 14 bodies were placed in a single grave early Friday morning.
The discovery has left the local community gripped by fear and anxiety. Homicide detectives have now launched a formal investigation into the matter.
A Secret Dawn Burial
The incident was first reported by two street boys who witnessed unusual activity at the cemetery. On the morning of 19th March 2026, three people arrived in a vehicle. They reportedly held a long discussion with the cemetery caretaker, a man named Ezekiel.

The group returned the following morning, 20th March, at around 6:00 a.m. in a white Land Cruiser. The street boys were then hired to dig a large grave. They claim approximately 14 bodies were buried there.
The Nyamira Connection
A significant twist has emerged regarding the origin of the deceased. Initial police checks found that none of the bodies matched local missing person reports in Kericho. This led to a disturbing new lead.

Claims have surfaced that the bodies may have been transported from neighbouring Nyamira County. Residents are now calling on the Kericho County government to explain how bodies from another county ended up in their local cemetery.

Signs of Torture
The condition of the remains has caused further alarm. Some of the bodies were reportedly found in body bags, while others appeared to be mutilated. Human rights organisations stated that some remains showed signs of torture and dismemberment.
Kericho County Governor Eric Mutai has denied that the county government was involved in the burial. He has called for a speedy investigation and the immediate exhumation of the bodies to establish their identities.
"Why are people coming here and dumping? There are about 14 or 12 bodies at the same place,” he said.
A Growing National Pattern
This discovery adds to a series of grim findings across Kenya. Activists pointed to previous cases where bodies were found in the River Yala and the Kware dumpsite in Nairobi. Others mentioned the Shakahola tragedy as a reason for their deep concern.
Detectives have visited the scene and are seeking court orders to begin the exhumation process. They aim to conduct forensic investigations to determine the cause of death for each individual. For now, the nation waits for answers as the mystery of Makaburini Cemetery unfolds.
