ODM party leader Oburu Oginga/HANDOUT

The ODM faction allied to embattled secretary general Edwin Sifuna has announced a ‘People’s National Delegates Convention' (NDC) to counter a similar one convened by party leader Oburu Oginga.

The two rival meetings have been convened in Nairobi on Friday, March 27. However, the venues of the two conventions are yet to be confirmed.

On Friday, the Sifuna led Linda Mwananchi, an ODM splinter group, announced it will make a return to Nairobi on March 27 for the people’s NDC.

On Sunday, the team that also has Siaya Governor James Orengo, ODM deputy party leader Godfrey Osotsi, and the Embakasi East MP Babu Owino will be camping in Mombasa for its fifth countrywide rally.

“People’s NDC, Friday, 27th March 2026,” the Linda Mwananchi team announced on their website, calling on Kenyans to attend in their numbers. The communication did not, however, indicate their agenda.

Sources within the Sifuna camp said the parallel NDC would bring together delegates and supporters who feel sidelined by what they term as attempts to push through major party decisions without broad consultation.

The announcement sets the stage for a dramatic showdown within the Orange Democratic Movement, with the Sifuna-aligned team saying the meeting will be held to allow grassroots members to deliberate on the party’s future direction.

The development comes as a separate NDC has already been convened by a group linked to Oburu Oginga, deepening an internal standoff that has been simmering within the party in recent weeks.

Party insiders say the decision to hold the rival meeting on the same day is widely being interpreted as a parallel convention aimed at challenging the legitimacy of the Oburu-led gathering.

The Star has established that the competing factions are quietly mobilising their supporters ahead of the conventions.

The Sifuna team has been going flat out in combat with the team led by Oburu and, by extension, President William Ruto, whom they noted does not deserve another term in office.

Apart from the parallel NDC, the Linda Mwananchi team also unveiled their rival ten-point agenda on Wednesday to counter an earlier one by the broad-based team.

In their report, they dismissed the ten-point agenda report, saying it was a betrayal of the late Raila Odinga’s legacy.

On Friday, the team unveiled a public resource donation portal to enable Kenyans to support their political activities ahead of 2027.

From the portal, Kenyans are able to support the cause from as little as Sh10 and also register as volunteers.

Insiders say the funds will help sustain the campaign as it mobilises supporters across the 47 counties.

The platform further features an events calendar where members can track upcoming meetings and rallies organised by the movement.

The online platform was, however, taken offline on Saturday in what Sifuna described as ‘thousands of malicious cyber attacks targeting the platform’.

He said the platform experienced a wave of hostile online activity shortly after its launch, even as it attracted hundreds of constructive suggestions from users on how the site could be improved.

“Expectedly, there were thousands of malicious attacks on the website as well as hundreds of positive feedback on how we can improve. We have taken the site offline to address the issues.” It had over 5000 subscribers by the time it was being taken offline.
