Youth outreach activities mark Commonwealth Day in Kenya
Community outreach and youth engagement activities marked this year’s Commonwealth Day celebrations in Kenya, with the Miss Commonwealth Kenya initiative leading a series of grassroots programmes aimed at strengthening youth leadership and community resilience.
Speaking in Nairobi on Tuesday, Miss Commonwealth Kenya Sarah Akinyi said empowering communities and young people is central to the future of the Commonwealth of Nations.
“Our communities are the foundation of progress. When we invest in local partnerships and empower young people to take leadership roles, we strengthen our ability to navigate economic and social challenges together,” Akinyi said.
The activities formed part of broader Commonwealth Day celebrations across the 56-member bloc, where organisers noted that nearly 60 per cent of the population is under the age of 30.
As part of the outreach programme, Miss Teen Commonwealth Kenya Cindy Wambui visited schools in Kiambu County and Nairobi counties to promote youth leadership, civic awareness and environmental responsibility.
At Kiaora Primary School in Juja, Wambui held interactive sessions with pupils on leadership and teamwork through the Glamour Scout campaign in partnership with the Kenya Scouts Association.
“Young people have the potential to shape the future of our nation. By engaging students early and encouraging leadership skills, we are helping them see themselves as part of a global community,” Wambui said.
She also visited Farasi Lane Primary School in Westlands, where she spoke to pupils about climate action, cultural heritage and the importance of community engagement.
Meanwhile, Akinyi visited the Mashimoni community in Kibra, where she donated food supplies to a community school run by residents.
“Mashimoni is a powerful reminder that communities can build solutions when they come together. Our role is to stand with them and amplify their efforts toward sustainable development,” she said.
The outreach programme also included a visit to Ngure Primary School in Ruiru, where Akinyi joined officials from the National Olympic Committee of Kenya to promote collaboration between youth, sports and community development.
Organisers said the activities were intended to encourage intergenerational dialogue and strengthen community resilience while promoting the values outlined in the Commonwealth Charter.
Miss Commonwealth Kenya National Director said the initiative seeks to create platforms for young people to contribute to national development while connecting local communities to global opportunities.
“Our vision is to nurture a generation that understands both its local responsibilities and its global role within the Commonwealth family,” the director said.
The outreach activities were part of wider efforts to promote community dialogue, youth empowerment and sustainable development during the Commonwealth Day period, as the organisation highlights the role of local innovation and collective growth.
