Kenyan digital creator and actor Abel Mutua, widely known as Mkurugenzi, has been publicly urged to produce an educational series explaining the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran.
The appeal was made by Shigwan Shiqo, speaking in a video circulated online, in which she said many people struggle to understand the complex geopolitical situation and would benefit from a clearer, accessible explanation.
Shigwan said that everyday citizens are confused by news reporting and international diplomacy, and that Mutua’s experience in storytelling could help demystify the conflict.
Abel Mutua is a recognized figure in East African media, with a career spanning acting, scriptwriting and directing, and he runs Phil-It Productions, a media firm producing content across digital platforms.

What People Want Explained

The conflict between the United States and Iran has escalated significantly in recent months. On 28 February 2026, United States forces, in coordination with Israel, launched extensive air and missile strikes across multiple Iranian cities and military sites.
According to U.S. officials, the operations – termed “Operation Epic Fury” – aim to degrade Iran’s military and nuclear infrastructure, and have struck more than 1,000 locations. These actions coincided with reports of the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, marking a major escalation in hostilities.
In response, Iranian forces have launched ballistic missiles and drone attacks against Israeli territory and United States military bases in the Gulf region, with reported engagements in Bahrain and Kuwait. The strategic Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global oil shipments, has seen commercial shipping effectively halted as vessels reroute or anchor outside the waterway amidst security warnings and attacks.

Efforts at Diplomacy

Prior to the recent escalation, negotiators from the United States and Iran engaged in talks during 2025 and early 2026 in locations such as Oman and Geneva, focusing on Iran’s nuclear programme and methods to avoid conflict. These discussions stalled without agreement and did not prevent the outbreak of direct military confrontation.

Public Demand for Accessible Storytelling

Shigwan’s appeal to Abel Mutua reflects a wider demand for explanations of international crises that can be easily understood by general audiences. The request underscores an interest in educational content that contextualizes global events and their potential impacts on economic conditions, security and everyday life. It remains unclear whether Mutua will take up the proposed project.
