The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has removed Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna from his position as the party’s Secretary General.
The decision was reached during a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held in Mombasa on Wednesday. In a statement, the party confirmed that Sifuna had been relieved ofhis duties with immediate effect.
"Having deliberated on matters relating to the conduct of the Secretary General, Senator Edwin Sifuna, the NEC resolved to remove him from office with immediate effect, in accordance with party constitution and applicable laws, effective immediately," the statement read.
The NEC also expressed concern over what it described as increasing levels of indiscipline within the party, particularly among senior leaders. The committee reiterated that ODM operates under its constitution, the rule of law, and collective decision-making through its established organs.
Following Sifuna’s removal, Busia Woman Representative Catherine Omanyo, who serves as one of the Deputy Secretaries General, will assume the role in an acting capacity until a substantive office holder is elected.

Sifuna has recently been associated with a faction opposed to the ongoing ODM-UDA talks, a stance that has intensified internal disagreements within the 20-year-old party.
In the lead-up to the NEC meeting, individuals perceived to be his allies also faced changes within the party’s structures. On Sunday, MP Amisi and Rift Valley ODM stalwart Kipkorir Menjo were removed from the NEC WhatsApp group. By early Wednesday, Amisi, Menjo, and Taita Taveta Senator Johnes Mwaruma had been removed from the NEC altogether.
Amisi has since vowed to challenge his removal from the party’s National Executive Committee. Speaking to Radio Generation, the MP described the decision as irregular and procedurally flawed.
“They have removed me from NEC, that was their target,” Amisi said.
According to Amisi, he received a letter notifying him of his removal while simultaneously congratulating him on being appointed a county chair.
Wednesday’s sitting marked the second NEC meeting since the death of ODM’s long-serving leader Raila Odinga in October last year. During its first meeting following his demise, the committee appointed Oburu Oginga to take over leadership of the party, bypassing the three deputy party leaders.
