Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba has announced that fees for day secondary schools in her constituency will remain at KSh 500 per term. The legislator shared the news via her X account, marking the second consecutive year of the subsidised programme.

This move comes only days after her Kiharu counterpart, Ndindi Nyoro, launched a similar initiative. The trend suggests a growing focus on using local constituency funds to tackle the rising cost of education in Kenya.

The logistics are handled through a central kitchen located in Ikinu. Food is prepared there and distributed to all schools by 11 am daily. To access these meals, students use a digital payment system:

• Secondary learners use an ATM card to swipe for lunch at 30 bob daily.

• Primary learners use a 'Tap to Eat' watch to pay 20 bob per meal.

The Kiharu Connection

Wamuchomba’s announcement mirrors the "Kiharu Masomo Bora" blueprint recently unveiled by Ndindi Nyoro. In Kiharu, the programme covers 65-day secondary schools and over 12,000 learners.

While both constituencies have set fees at KSh 500, Kiharu has introduced unique features such as "Chapati Friday," where students are served chapatis on the last Friday of every month.

Kiharu also prohibits any additional registration fees and has capped remedial costs at KSh 1,000 per term.

Future Projects and Skills

Looking ahead, Wamuchomba announced plans to produce sanitary pads in Githunguri using banana fibres. These will be distributed to all girls in the constituency next year.

Additionally, short-course beneficiaries are set to begin their studies this coming Monday, following a commissioning ceremony at Githunguri Stadium.
