On Friday morning, 9 January, Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos Ogamba stood in Eldoret to deliver the highly anticipated 2025 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) results.
For most of the nearly one million candidates, it was a day of relief. However, for a specific group of students, the news was devastating.
The Shadow of Irregularities
The most striking detail of the announcement was the fate of 1,180 candidates. These students will not receive their results this year.

According to the Cabinet Secretary, the Ministry has officially cancelled the results of 1,180 students due to examination irregularities.
The decision follows a strict monitoring period during the national exams. While the specific nature of each incident was not detailed, the move signals a continued crackdown on academic dishonesty.
This news has left over a thousand families without a clear path forward for the 2026 academic year.
"Number of students whose results have been cancelled for irregularities - 1180," CS Julius Migos Ogamba confirmed.
A Glimpse at National Performance
Despite the cancellations, the overall national performance showed significant achievements. A total of 270,715 candidates secured direct entry to university by scoring a mean grade of C+ or above.

The elite group of top performers also grew, with 1,932 students obtaining a straight A. For the broader population, 507,131 students achieved a C- or above, while 634,082 candidates reached the pass grade of D+ or higher.

The Logistics of a Massive Operation
The scale of the 2025 exams was immense. David Njegere, the CEO of the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC), reported that 993,226 candidates sat for the exams across 10,765 secondary schools.
The gender distribution remained balanced, with 501,214 female candidates and 492,012 male candidates taking part. Over a period of 24 days—from 21 October to 21 November 2025—students were tested in 30 different subjects across a total of 74 papers.
How to Check Individual Results
For the students whose results were not cancelled, the Ministry has provided an online portal for easy access. To find your score:
• Visit the official website: results.knec.ac.ke.
• Enter your index number.
• Enter one of your names exactly as they appear on your 2025 registration data.
The Fight for Exam Integrity
The KCSE serves as the main gateway to tertiary education and government-sponsored university placements in Kenya.

In recent years, the government has introduced rigorous measures to prevent cheating, including the use of secure containers for exam papers and high-level surveillance.
The cancellation of over 1,000 results in 2025 reflects an ongoing battle to ensure that the grades awarded truly reflect a student's individual effort and merit.
