Cabinet Secretary for Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs Hassan Joho has announced plans to mark the 81st birthday of late opposition leader Raila Odinga, describing him as a symbol of resilience whose ideals continue to shape generations of leaders.

In a statement, Joho said leaders and supporters would gather today, January 7, to honour and celebrate Odinga’s life, political journey and enduring influence on Kenya’s democratic struggle.

“We will be coming together to honour and celebrate Baba Rt. Honourable Raila Amolo Odinga @ 80+1,” Joho said.

The Cabinet Secretary said Raila’s life story offers enduring lessons on perseverance and purpose, noting that his long political journey was defined by sacrifice and determination rather than personal comfort.

“His journey teaches us that resilience is not the absence of struggle but the courage to walk through it with purpose,” Joho said.

Joho said Raila’s leadership legacy extends beyond his personal achievements, arguing that his vision has been sustained through the many leaders and citizens he has mentored over the decades.

“His vision did not end with him, it took root in the minds and hearts of those he mentored,” he said.

According to Joho, the former Prime Minister’s ideals continue to influence public life through the values he instilled in younger generations, particularly his emphasis on justice, accountability and people-centred leadership.

“In us, his ideals continue to breathe, reminding us that true leadership is measured not by years but by the generations it awakens,” Joho added.

Raila Odinga, a long-serving opposition leader and former prime minister, has been a central figure in Kenya’s political history for decades, playing a key role in the country’s push for multiparty democracy and constitutional reforms.

He died on October 15, 2025.

Before his death, he was the party leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party.

Joho served under him as Deputy Party leader, alongside Cooperatives CS Wycliffe Oparanya.

Joho’s remarks come as political leaders from across the country prepare to join Odinga’s family, allies and supporters in commemorating his birthday and reflecting on his influence on Kenya’s political landscape, over the years

The planned celebration is expected to highlight Odinga’s contributions to democratic governance and his role in shaping political consciousness across generations, with speakers expected to underscore the enduring relevance of his ideals in contemporary leadership discourse.
