Mohammed Abduba Dida’s life has been marked by dramatic shifts, taking him from a respected teacher in Nairobi to a presidential contender, and ultimately to a U.S. prison cell.

Born in Wajir County in 1975, Dida is a Somali by ethnicity and a devout Muslim. He studied Islamic Religious Education and Kiswahili at Moi University.

His entry was surprising in a political environment often dominated by dynasties and huge campaign budgets. His campaign was minimalist, lacking flashy posters or wealthy donors.

Dida’s slogan was “Real Change”.

In the 2013 election, Dida garnered 52,848 votes, representing 0.43% of the popular vote, placing him fifth overall.

His defining moment came during the 2013 presidential debates. While established politicians used carefully planned speeches, Dida was noted for his raw honesty and sharp humour.

He used everyday analogies and Kiswahili proverbs to connect with citizens, from scholars to street vendors.

“If a teacher can run a class, he can run a country.”

Dida ran for president again in the 2017 General Election. Though his political journey did not end in victory, he stayed in the media, advocating for moral leadership and inspiring a new generation to believe in change.

Downfall and Incarceration

In 2019, Dida moved to the United States to continue his education. He married an American woman, but their relationship began to struggle due to personal differences.

The conflict escalated in 2021 when his wife sought a restraining order, alleging stalking and threatening behaviour. The order was granted.

The situation worsened after Dida violated the restraining order. He visited a mosque near their residence, unaware that this location fell within the court’s restricted zone.

Dida was subsequently charged with stalking, transmitting threats, and violating the restraining order.

He was sentenced to seven years in prison. This included two years for stalking and transmitting threats, plus five years for violating the restraining order. Dida served his sentence at the Big Muddy Correctional Centre in Illinois.

After serving three years, Dida was released on parole in March 2025. He is currently serving the remainder of his sentence outside prison walls until April 2029.

Now living in Minnesota, Dida has completely shifted his focus. He has reinvented himself, launching a new platform called the Dida Global Network.

He is now sharing messages of unity, spirituality, and personal transformation. Dida is positioning his new venture as a global spiritual outreach initiative, reviving the philanthropic work he had registered back in 2017.

Addressing Kenyans, he appealed for unity and a broader global outlook.

“I request you to rise above tribe and religion. Think of the world. Join me — I have a lot to share with you, and we have a lot to share with the world.”

Dida’s journey highlights an extraordinary path from the classroom to the political arena, through legal trouble, and now onto a digital platform focused on spiritual awakening.
