In a dramatic pre-dawn operation, the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA), backed by a multi-agency security team, dismantled a sprawling illicit alcohol den in Soweto village, Kahawa West. More than 10,000 litres of toxic Kangara were poured into the sewers during the raid.
The crackdown is part of Interior Cabinet Secretary Hon. Kipchumba Murkomen’s 100-day rapid results initiative aimed at eradicating illicit brews across the country.
The enforcement team, comprising NACADA officers, National Government Administration Officers (NGAO), and an elite police unit from the Nairobi Regional Security team, descended on the site at 5:00 a.m.
Acting on intelligence, they found a fully operational brewing hub. Although the brewers managed to escape into the darkness, they abandoned their illegal enterprise.

The officers destroyed 30 twenty-litre jerricans of ready-to-sell chang’aa, along with massive boiling tanks and plastic drums used to distill Kangara. By 8:30 a.m., the operation was successfully concluded with no casualties reported.
NACADA Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Anthony Omerikwa, praised the success of the raid, describing it as proof of the effectiveness of multi-agency collaboration.
“This crackdown is a clear signal to the peddlers of death that their days are numbered. The Authority is working closely with all multi-agency teams across the country to ensure full implementation of the CS's directive with the broader goal of ensuring the country is safe from the harms of illicit and counterfeited alcohol,” he said.

Dr. Omerikwa also thanked CS Murkomen for his support and called on the public to join the fight.
“We thank the CS for his leadership. We now urge every Kenyan to be our eyes and ears. Share information with your local authorities or use our toll-free, 24-hour hotline, 1192. Together, we will reclaim our communities from this scourge,” he added.
