Kenya's national football team, the Harambee Stars, secured a significant triumph on Sunday, August 3, 2025, by winning their opening African Nations Championship (CHAN) fixture against formidable opponents, DR Congo.
This commendable performance set a positive tone for their campaign.
Following the match, the team had the honour of interacting with President William Ruto. This moment transcended typical sporting celebrations as a direct and heartfelt plea concerning affordable housing emerged from one of the players.

A Player's Personal Appeal
During the engagement with the Head of State, a member of the Harambee Stars squad, goalkeeper Faruk Shikalo, seized a unique opportunity to articulate a crucial personal and collective aspiration.
His request was unambiguous, focusing on the government's ongoing national affordable housing initiative.

Shikalo’s statement went beyond a mere general request; he highlighted the tangible progress of the housing project and expressed a clear desire for the football players to be actively considered for inclusion. "I, as Faruk, have one request," he began, setting a direct tone.
"Please remember us on these affordable houses coming up," Shikhalo requested President Ruto while shaking hands.

In his response, Ruto promised that he would organize how the players’ requests could be effected.
“I know how I will arrange that. If it is affordable houses you want, I will make arrangements,” Ruto responded.
Understanding the African Nations Championship (CHAN)
The African Nations Championship, often abbreviated as CHAN, stands as a distinctive football tournament within the Confederation of African Football (CAF) calendar.
Held biennially, its unique format mandates that only players who are actively plying their trade in their country's domestic league are eligible to participate.
This distinguishes it from the more widely known Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which welcomes national team players from clubs across the globe.
The primary objective of CHAN is to elevate the quality and visibility of local leagues across the continent, offering a significant platform for home-grown talent to compete at an international level.
For many local players, excelling in CHAN can serve as a crucial stepping stone towards professional contracts abroad or enhanced recognition within their national setup.

Delving into Kenya's Affordable Housing Programme
The Affordable Housing Programme represents one of the cornerstone projects of the Kenyan government, designed to tackle the pervasive issue of housing scarcity and high costs across the nation.
Envisioned as a transformative initiative under the 'Big Four Agenda', its ambition is to deliver a substantial number of low-cost housing units, thereby making homeownership a tangible reality for a broader spectrum of the population, particularly those within the low and middle-income brackets.
